Beautiful Sailing / Water-Sports Destinations : Yachting In The Stockholm Archipelago - A Midsummer Night's Dream !

The Baltic might not be the first place that comes to mind when considering a luxury yacht charter vacation, but during the short Scandinavian summer, it's a magical place with warm breezes and almost 24 hours of daylight. Even as far south as Stockholm, summer nights never get completely dark, the sky just takes on a deep blue tint for a few hours before the sun comes back up again.

The best time to visit is June to September, and like everywhere else in Europe, July and August are the most crowded. For a totally Swedish experience, visit during Midsummer (usually around June 20), the longest day of the year and one of the most celebrated holidays in Sweden. To avoid the crowds, visit in September (or even at the end of August) when the warmth of the summer still lingers and you will have more space to yourself.

Begin your trip by spending a few days exploring Stockholm, the beautiful capital of Sweden, before heading out on your yacht. The Stockholm Archipelago is about 150 miles long by 50 miles wide and contains around 30,000 islands and islets, some verdant with luxury hotels, shops and restaurants, others just a bare rock. You don't have to go far to get to Fjaderholmarna (the Feather Islands). These 4 islands lie 25 minutes from Stockholm, and you might be tempted to keep cruising since you only just started, but they are well worth a stop. Fjaderholmarna is home to several restaurants, cafes, a seafood smokehouse (with a restaurant and take-out shop), shops, local artisans, an outdoor theatre, and Mackmyra whiskey distillery, where you can tour the facilities and try their products.

Vaxholm, about an hour by boat from Stockholm, was founded in 1647 and has been an archipelago hub since the late 1800s when it was discovered by wealthy Stockholmers who built vacation homes on the island and started spending their summers here. Today, Vaxholm has about 10,000 year-round inhabitants and many visitors, especially during the summer. The harbor is right in the center of this very walkable town, so you can easily stroll around and take in the sights. There are several shops, restaurants, cafes, a few grocery stores, a liquor store and a pharmacy. Notable sights include Bogesund Castle (built in the 1640s) and the Vaxholm Citadel (built 1833-1863) which is no longer used for military purposes but instead houses a museum, shop, bistro and B&B.

Grinda lies about 2 hours from Stockholm and its several sandy beaches and rocky outcrops make it a popular swimming destination for Stockholmers. The island is small, only a 15-minute walk across, and has a pub, grocery store, and a well-known hotel and restaurant, Grinda Wardshus, housed in an Art Noveau building from 1908. There are kayaks available for rent from the hotel, and they can also arrange activities such as rock climbing or archery.

Sandhamn (Sand Harbor) on the island Sandon (Sand Island) is the "yachting capital" of Stockholm's archipelago. The Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) built their club house here in 1897 (still in use) and their many annual races attract sailors from around the world. The most well known is perhaps the 2-day race "Gotland Runt" (Round Gotland). This particular event is also famous for the many parties taking place in Sandhamn both before and after the race. The town has many restaurants, bars and shops, as well as a few hotels and museums. There are also several sandy beaches on the island, and the largest, Trouville, is only a 20-minute walk from downtown.

With more than 60 guest harbors in Stockholm's archipelago, there are many more places to visit and sights to see, but these are a few places to get you started in your planning.

Futuristic Sea Limousine In The World Of Luxury !

God created the world, so guess what man created?. From artificial islands to a futuristic ‘aqua limo’, it is rightly said that ‘Luxury’- is something that needs to be ‘created’.

Designed and developed by Dennis Ingemansson, the Dubai Sea Limousine is an idea based for the “The World”- a man-made archipelago of 300 islands constructed in the shape of a world map and located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) off the coast of Dubai.

The society comprises of a series of artificial islands which are currently under construction. And this ambitious new taxi service seeks to become the sort of marine transportation between artificial islands.

The World is one of several artificial island projects being constructed in Dubai, others being the Palm Islands. Like the other artificial island projects, The World is built primarily using sand dredged from the sea It was developed by Nakheel Properties and was originally conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.

Each island in the archipelago ranges from about 14,000 m² (150,000 square feet) to 42,000 m² (450,000 square feet). The distance between each island will be an average of 100 metres (328 feet). The entire development covers an area of 9 km in length and 6 km in width, surrounded by an oval breakwater. Roughly 232 km (144 miles) of shoreline has been created.

The overall development cost of The World was estimated as 14 billion USD. As for the individual islands, prices range between 15 and 50 million USD. One island is still for sale at a price of 250 million USD.

The discrete sea limousine draws on luxury yacht design and comes powered with solar cells integrated in the windows skin and moves forward with the help of a hovercraft. The vehicle is controlled by a satellite navigation system and needs no human pilot which makes this whole concept truly futuristic.

What’s next on the agenda after ‘The World’?

Hopefully not a black hole.

Luxury Yacht Toys: Reloaded!

From an amphibious computer to floating lounges! There’s just no stopping when the rich decide to indulge… Check out these amazing yacht toys. Yes, some of these are only concepts, but what a concept they are. The "PC of the Swim Rings" for example would turn the most hapless landlubber into a water rat, creating a floating computer and media center.

Displayed at the Next-gen PC Design Competition, this aquatic marvel would include "a GPRS receiver, Bluetooth, finger-touch input, solar power-driven processor, water-cooling system, magnetic charging interface, and waterproof design." Hey, if you're going to dream, might as well go all the way.

And just to show that it isn't entirely frivolous, according to BornRich, the "amphibious PC" can also be detached to double as a land-based computer with a 7-inch LCD, Webcam, stereo speakers, and even a backlit keyboard for nocturnal use. As long as we're talking fantasy, we request that it be combined with the "RadioRaft"--especially its six stainless steel cupholders--to make it the greatest pool invention ever made.
'RadioRaft':It’s a completely submersible radioraft, with 400 watts of power, that will give you 8 continuous hours of play time, with 6 stainless steel cupholders, a watertight glove box to protect your iPod with controls on the top. So, yeah, they basically took a bouy and put in some cup-holders and speakers. Oh, and an iPod dock. All for the outrageous price of $2000.

You must be having designer pool floats in your pool, but then most of them are meant for single persons! So, if you want to swim and party with your group then this Cabana Islander is the float for you! The luxury floating cabana island paradise is constructed of heavy-gauge PVC with a boarding platform, center swim porthole and a detachable, wind-resistant, nylon shade. The cabana float includes a floating 16-quart cooler with cup holders, and a rope grommet for tethering. The spacious cabana float can accommodate 6 persons and is priced at $319.99.

Luxurious Canoes... That’s Right. Canoes!

It isn’t unusual to come across luxurious means of transport for water like yachts, submarines, and personal cruise liners. But a luxurious canoe seems to be the first of its kind to find its place here. Just recently at Paris Boat Show, Lancel and Ostréa Marine presented a canoe that is called Le Nantucket.

Epitomizing the concept of ‘French lightness’ of the French luxury style, the Nantucket is a small boat of 7.7 m long. However it is capable of attaining a speed of 25 knots through its 120 horses. And in the middle of the lake you can groove to some hi-tech entertainment as it comes equipped with an LCD display, a Bose sound system and an integrated Ipod. Offered in a limited number of 25 only, this elegantly subtle French luxury is up for €150,000 ($236,000).

In step with Le Nantucket from France, there’s a little less expensive option for $11,000 (rather much more affordable) than the French beauty. Luxury boat builder, Cailou, has exclusively crafted a limited edition designer canoe, only 5 of them, for 20ltd only. This beautiful black fiberglass sailing canoe features a fiberglass deck with mahogany trim, molded fiberglass seats with floatation cushions, carbon fiber mast, and a Dacron sail rig with carbon fiber batons. Impressively blending time-honored form with contemporary style and materials, this unparalleled water vehicle renders performance without sacrificing ease…ease of function, ease of transportation, ease of handling.

Weighing just 100lbs, this sleeker, lighter kayak version can comfortably accommodate two full sized adults. Also the sitting furniture is movable so you can arrange it as per your convenience. Featuring a retractable centerboard and a carbon fiber mast, the sail can be reefed for those blustery days. There is plenty of stowage on board the boat – so day trips can even become overnights for the more rustic amongst us.

Underwater Speakers - Now Swim To The Sound Of Music

Seemingly a pool toy, the speakers pictured below are developed and designed to add to your poolside musical experience. With a potential to submerse up to 9 feet for long 30 minutes, these weatherproof speakers can stand against the weird nature of unusual elements. How does it work?

By connecting wirelessly to a powered transmitter-dock with an integrated audio-in for an MP3 player, it comes equipped with a six-hour battery life having a range of 150 feet. A single transmitter is enough to support around 10 speakers. Every individual speaker has four ultra-bright LED lights that add to the aura of the lovely evening.

Underwater technology is based on one key principle: Sound travels about five times faster in water than in air. Closely knit water molecules need less displacement to transfer sound.

That may be a simple premise, but numerous types of underwater sound systems have flowed from it. When it comes to the speaker component, though, manufacturers say there are two basic varieties: (1) A moving coil speaker, similar to the shaker of a standard home audio system. Coil speakers, such as tactile sound transfusion speakers, are amp-driven and emit strong vibrations ideal for rhythmic, low frequency sounds. (2) A voltage-driven "piezoelectric" speaker, which is constructed with layers of stainless steel disks.

Following its initial debut, the underwater sound system generally was considered a specialized, luxury feature. Its use was restricted to institutional arenas, such as space training, naval research and synchronized swimming.

For people who participate in home exercise, lap swimming can be boring and tedious, according to a manufacturer. "When you can keep cadence with music just like a jogger, you can time yourself and do exercise," he says. In the last couple of years, he has seen a hundredfold increase in the number of orders he receives for tactile sound-based speakers.

He and other manufacturers have seen underwater sound used in many venues. "The newest market we've had is people who want to listen to the news or music while they're swimming in place in the endless pools," says another manufacturer.

Sunseeker gets a New Lift!

If you have been following recent market reports or even watching the most recent James Bond movie, you will no doubt be aware that Sunseeker are breaking new ground in their production of 30m+ superyachts. Hugely impressive vessels inside and out, Sunseeker have a strong plan ahead to meet the current and anticipated future demand..

As Sunseeker yachts get even larger so too is the machinery that moves them from place to place. Looming over the recently developed shipyards on Poole Quay is a new travel hoist capable of lifting and moving boats up to 260,000 kg (260 tonnes). The new hoist, supplied by Wise Handling Limited, has a height of almost 13 metres and is over 14 metres wide; it has been built to launch or retrieve boats up to 47 Metres.

Sunseeker’s new range of luxury yachts includes the 37 Metre, 34 Metre and Predator 108 and there are a number of even larger models in the design and development stage. Accompanying the new hoist at Poole will be a similar model for the company’s Osprey Quay Shipyards on Portland, Dorset. The 11 acre site is currently being used for the construction of various models and planned development for the near future will increase Sunseeker’s building capability.

Robert Braithwaite CBE, Sunseeker’s managing director commented, “This level of investment is very important to us if we are to maintain our position as one of the world’s major boat builders. Lifting and moving these large yachts around can take time and space. We currently operate a 100 Tonne hoist but this larger version will provide far more flexibility in launching and lifting the larger models”..

Are Mega Yachts The Ultimate In Luxury?

Like so much else in modern life, luxury seems to have slipped its moorings! Once upon a time we knew where we were. Luxuries were what the monarchy and aristocracy consumed: houses in the country, staff to serve you, big cars, weekends in the South of France, caviar and champagne and gold plated taps...

What is Luxury?

A luxury is something you do not need. To enjoy a luxury a consumer needs surplus income to spend on things that are superfluous. Something is a luxury only if it carries a particular kind of exclusivity. Luxury experiences are open to only a few people yet lots of people want them. By buying something luxurious they are displaying not just their wealth but their refinement.

That is why luxury cannot be sold as consumerism but as discernment, spirituality, healing, and getting close to nature…

The other common theme to luxury in all ages is that it reflects what we are trying to escape.

Perhaps the first mass myth of luxury was the legend of Cockayne. Cockayne was a place of unimaginable luxury for people who were familiar with famine: a place where food was so plentiful it was used as a building material. Cockayne had a spring-like temperature. Inhabitants remained 33 years old, the age at which Christ died, and consented to gentle offers of love-making. To heal yourself you bathed in mysterious pools.

Centuries later we are still living out this medieval myth of the luxurious life. Whenever we walk into a luxury spa hotel, we indulge in a little bit of Cockayne: a world of never ending hot water, clean towels, service on tap, soothing lotions that make you feel younger, health restoring pools and fine food.

What will count as luxuries for us in future will reflect the everyday experiences we are trying to get away from.

Affluent Asian consumers will want luxuries that signal, very publicly, their wealth and how far they have travelled from their family’s rural roots. Many of those products may well be European in origin, embued with a tradition of luxury goods from Paris and Milan.

In a world that grows more complex we will put more value on simplicity: from the easy to use interface of the iPod, to the pared down luxury hotels that sell themselves with a less is more minimalism.

In a world that seems to worship speed going a little faster is not a luxury. Being able to go a lot slower is the luxury. That is what we envy.

So, is the luxury connection with the yachting lifestyle justified?

Will owning a Megayacht truly proclaim that the world is yours..

that you have arrived..

that you have found the ultimate luxury asset

and understood what it means... to truly experience it!
