And here comes the latest news from Mumbai... According to Mumbai mirror (local newspaper) the Navy has ‘okayed’ the jetty service near radio club.
The jetty is going to be used as a transport service from colaba to navi Mumbai and borivali (other parts of Mumbai). The aim is to connect other distant parts of Mumbai through the mode of water transport.
A hovercraft will be used to facilitate this transfer. In the past there were similar services being offered from ‘ferrys warf’ but was shut down. “The project cost will vary from Rs 300-Rs 800 crore, depending upon the mode of transport used,” says Satish Gawai, vice-chairman and managing director, MSRDC.
As stated in the paper ‘The nodal agency for the project, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), recently got clearance from the Indian Navy to set up a terminal at Jamshedji Bunder, south of Radio Club.
It plans to invite tenders for construction of the jetty in the next two months even though it is yet to get a no-objection certificate from the environment department.’
This is the image of gateway of india and radio club.
Radio club is located near the gateway of India which is a prominent location of yachts in Mumbai and also hosts the highest number of yachts in India. Earlier this year there was the prestigious ‘mumbai international boat show that was held and a temporary pontoon facility was created on the waters at gateway of India.
This is the temporary setup that was created for the boat show in mumbai earlier this year.
There is also some other bright news for Mumbaites, the govt also plans to start a similar transport service from Nariman point to Borivali for “Global tenders for the Borivli-Nariman Point project will be out this month,” says Minister of Public Works Department Anil Deshmukh who is also the chairman of MSRDC.
If the plan goes through as intended one can expect a good ‘get on & get off’ facility atleast for the transportation purpose.
In effect it will also help create a favorable environment for the yachting industry and would probably boost the chances of creating some sort of marina at the gateway of India which would facilitate the growth of yachts. it will also add as an encouragement for investors who are probably afraid of the popular red tapism in india.
